The Bells Beach Surfing Recreation reserve is the home of 6 fantastic breaks that work under a variety of wind, swell and tide conditions. These breaks are within walking distance of each other.
Bells Beach itself has two main breaks, the Bowl and Rincon. Both right-hand breaks work under slightly different conditions and suit intermediate to advanced surfers. Bells Beach is the home to the longest running surf contest in the world - the Rip Curl Easter Pro. It is renowned for offering consistent high quality surf, particularly from March through to October, but even in the off months some sensational surf can come through.
Just south-west of Rincon is Centreside another right-hander, usually less crowded, and Southside, a long left hand break.
North-east of the "bowl" is Winki Pop. Most of the hot young locals prefer this fast and mean right hander to Bell's and the crowd usually reflects this preference. More mature surfers tend to prefer the friendly crowd at Bells!
Within one hours drive, either north-east or south-west of Bells, are many, many breaks that work under a variety of swell, wind and tide conditions. These breaks include, but are not limited to: Bird Rock, Guvvos, Lorne, Cathedrals, Outside Reef, Kennet River, Jarosite, Bancoora, Beacon, Grinders, Wye River, Pt Lonsdale.
Crowds - One of the real nice things about surfing this area is the laid back surfers who surf here. This is the place where the gentlemen of the surf hang out! With 2 exceptions though - Bird Rock and Winki Pop! I must admit there are a few guys who surf these two breaks who could grow up! But the Bowl, Rincon, Centerside and Southside are the places to surf if you want a peaceful, fun, surf! The rest of the Surfcoast is friendly too!
The variety of surf on this stretch of coast is one of its outstanding features. Your surf guide knows these breaks and will take you to the best under the conditions available according to your level of surfing. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to decide whether or not you will venture out in to the surf in the conditions of the day. The surf can get VERY big here! But you may be pleased to know that there is always an alternative to the demanding waves of the Bell's Beach area.
